One of the things that should be put in place if you and your dog are going to have a good relationship together is the use of commands. These will help you to interact with your dog better and your dog will begin to understand what you require of him. And dogs generally want very much to please their owner. So once your dog understands these basic commands, he will likely learn them very quick. You should teach your dog to sit first of all. This is usually the place that most dog owners begin their training. To successfully teach your dog this command, you will need to be in a quiet spot and have some treats within your reach. First of all give the dog a bit of attention, reassuring him that all is ok. When you know he is settled, go over to him and, pushing gently on his backside, tell him “sit”. When your dog sits down, give him lots of praise and a treat. Your dog should quickly learn this trick and after a couple of attempts will start to perform the command upon suggestion alone. After mastering the sit command, you could next go onto teaching your dog the lie down command. You will need to decide on the exact phrase you are going to use when teaching it to your dog and stick with this terminology. Again, you should have treats with you. This time, sitting at the dogs level, put a treat inside you hand and bring your hand toward the floor as your dog is sniffing it. This will cause the dog to necessarily lie down. As he is lying down make sure you utter the command to him followed by giving him the treat when he has lied down and then by praising him. Taking a dog for a walk is a basic requirement for any dog owner and when you take your dog for a walk, you will need him to be on his leash in many areas. You must make sure that the collar doesn’t have a tendency to slip off or your dog is likely to do the great escape regularly. There are people who use choke collars to keep their dogs under control, but it is up to you to choose what you think is the most suitable collar for your dog. You need to get your dog a leash that is not too long. If it extends too far, your dog will get out of your reach and be difficult to control. You should gently give a tug at his collar whenever he is being unruly and command him to heal. You may also bring some treats with you to help your dog learn good behavior if you like. The last important command you need to teach your dog is to stay. For this, keep your dog’s leash on the animal and get him to sit down first of all. In this position, signal and command him to stay. Using hand signals will help your dog understand what you are requiring of him. Each time you perform this command, step away from the dog, getting further with each attempt.

There are some special precautions that need to be taken while caring for your dog during the winter months. If you have a breed of dog that has very short hair, or if you have a puppy or older dog, or if you have recently given your dog a close haircut, then your dog will be extremely sensitive to the adverse affects of cold. In order to keep your dog from suffering from hypothermia, you can’t expose your dog to the cold for a long period of time.

Don’t let your dog off of his leash when there is snow or ice on the ground, or when there’s poor visibility due to snow. Having a layer of snow or ice on the ground will make it difficult for your dog to use his sense of smell to return to you if he gets away from you. If visibility is impaired, such as in a snowstorm, then it’s unlikely that you will be able to see each other. Winter is the season in which most dogs get lost or separated from their owners due to these factors. You should always keep your dog on his leash when taking him for walks in the winter.

Older dogs and puppies are much more susceptible to the cold, and shouldn’t be taken outside in cold weather unless they need to use the bathroom. This advice also goes for dogs that have recently gotten a close haircut and shave, as without the protective layer of fur on them they will become cold very quickly outside. Dogs that stay out in the cold too long can eventually develop hypothermia. Never let your puppy or older dog roam around outside when it’s cold out without your supervision, as hypothermia might make your dog lethargic and confused and unable to find his way back to you or back inside the house.

If your dog has issues with the cold, consider buying him a full-body sweater. Dogs normally don’t like to wear sweaters, but it will definitely help keep him protected from the cold. Likewise, you should make sure that his sleeping area is free of drafts and isn’t in a particularly cold area of the house.

Wipe your dog off after he gets in from the snow, paying special attention to his paws. The snow your dog picks up while playing outside or going for a walk may have contaminants in it such as rock salt and antifreeze, and your dog may become poisoned by licking it off of his fur. Even if your dog does not lick the snow off of his fur, it will eventually melt and make your dog’s fur wet, which will worsen the effects of the cold weather on your dog. By cleaning off your dog’s paws, you can ensure that no ice gets stuck in between them. Having ice stuck between your dog’s paws will make it difficult for him to walk until it melts and can also sometimes cause damage to his paw-pads if the ice is sharp and strong enough.Content written by Gary Hamilton of ohmydogsupplies.com, where you can find a extraordinary selection of dog seat covers online.

Being a dog owner is not an easy task. A canine requires a lot of your time, attention, love, affection, walks in the park, training, food, toys, a bed and sweet treats for when he learns how to behave. A pet store is a place where there’s a lot of compassion and happiness and many furry little creatures are waiting to be taken to your house and be offered a home. Before deciding to take home a pet you should consider and write down all the necessary things needed to support your pet and ensure he leads a decent happy life.

Some items will be mandatory in the life of your canine and you will be forced to provide them. A leash with a decent collar is the main thing you will have to purchase for your canine friend because he will wear it on a daily basis. You should take the necessary measurements before purchasing one to make sure you get him one that fits. The material from which the collar is made should be resistant enough to prevent it from breaking otherwise you will be forced to purchase one over and over again and in time it will cost you a fortune.

A bowl will be necessary in which the canine will receive his food and another one for his water. These should be clean at all times and you should purchase two sets so you are able to clean one of them while the other is being used. Clean the bowls on a daily basis to prevent your dog from developing an infection from catching bacteria from an unwashed bowl. Toys should be included and be present on your shopping list to keep your puppy well entertained in your absence. He will have an easier time dealing with your absence because he will be pleasantly occupied.

Toys come in handy when you leave a canine by himself for a long period of time. They prevent the dog from going berserk and thrashing your house in an act of loneliness and desperation. The right type of toys will keep him happy and at bay when you are forced to go to work and he will focus on chewing them instead of your furniture. There are toys that when the canine plays with them they disperse treats after periods of time. In this manner you will teach your canine to become obedient and reward him for his good behavior both in your presence and in your absence.

Dog training can be quite demanding of your time but once the dog has mastered all of the commands and what is expected of him you will no longer have any issues with leaving him home by himself. If you own a car and have to travel quite often and you have considered taking your canine with you, a car cover and some dog seat belts are necessary to restrain him and keep him warm and comfortable during the trip. Depending on the budget at your disposal you should purchase a number of items that you can afford and leave the rest for later, to be purchased in time. Only go with the most necessary ones at the moment, they will be worth the investment.Content provided by Erica Clark of Oh My Dog Supplies, check out our diverse selection of raised dog feeders online.

Owning a dog can be very expensive and we are not just talking about dog food and chew toys. You should analyze your budget carefully before deciding to purchase a life time companion as a pet. If you do this right you will avoid any potential future financial problems that may have arisen otherwise. You should calculate your monthly income and expenses before determining whether you afford a dog or not. A responsible owner is one that provides quality food for his dog and takes him on regular exercising sessions and buys him the toys he needs to help with his training.

Owning a dog will prove to take around the interval of $700 to $3000 out of your pocket yearly. You will be able to save the right amount of money if you choose correctly from the financial point of view and for your dog’s life. The lifestyle costs of dog ownership may be influenced by the zone in which you reside or the manner in which you reside, and also by the dog’s personal needs that come with his particular age, breed, and size.

The First Investment

If you are set on buying a pet then you need to possess some serious capital and have a steady good source of cash flow. A purebred costs somewhere around the price of $500 towards $2000. You should be sure that you make your purchase from a professional who has done a fine job at breeding dogs. This type of choice will ensure you get a fine breed which has been brought up right and save you a lot of money in the future because you won’t have to face all the other problems which may arise when purchasing a half breed.

If you do decide however to go with a homeless dog from a shelter or a rescue group then the price will go down and you will have the occasion to help an animal in need by providing him with the home and affection he needs. Adopting a dog is a decision which will cost you somewhere between $50 and $200 in most cases. Almost all shelters have their dogs go through a screening process to discover if they are in a clean bill of health. It is highly probable that in either case you will end up with a healthy dog.

Having finalized the decision to purchase a dog the following step would be locating a decent vet. Your dog will need to go through some periodical health checks to ensure he is in good health and to provide him with the necessary vaccines, medications and treatment in case of a health problem. The first visit to the vet will take from 50$ to $300 from your pocket depending on what the dog requires. The cost of maintaining a dog in perfect health should be added to your monthly expenses.

Dog Necessities

You should add to the list the cost of dog food. Your dog will require daily healthy food as well as a few treats here and there to provide him with enough variety to avoid feeding him the same food over and over. Depending on the breed, size and age of your dog he will eat a certain amount of food which will end up costing you between $250 and $700 yearly. The price of the food also depends on the dog brand you are feeding him. You will also need to buy enough toys for him to play with to avoid house incidents, and the toys will help his mind be more happy and relaxed and thus he will not chew on your possessions or damage your home. If he does have the habits of destroying all his chew toys then consider purchasing a toy that’s meant to withstand some serious stress.

Your dog will need a place to sleep. You will have to purchase a dog bed for him so he will learn that this is his spot where he can relax every time he feels tired. The dog bed will be somewhere in between $50 and $200 based on the type of bed you are willing to buy. You should consider paying a higher one time price for the purchase of a quality bed which will last longer than having to change his bed every couple of months. The dog will need to be fit with a collar and an ID tag so he may be located if he becomes separated from you and he can’t find his way home. Dog owners spend an average of $20 sometimes even $50 each year for a leash with tags.

Costs of Grooming

The breed has a huge factor when it comes to the type of fur a dog has. That fur will require maintenance because he will shed a lot. Depending on the dog’s fur coat you will have to have your dog groomed on a frequent basis. You will end up spending from $30 to $500 every year on visits to grooming experts that provide the right service and have the necessary grooming equipment.

Healthcare for your Dog

Your dog will need to be taken to the vet every six months, each visit adding up to $100 sometimes even as much as $300. In the event you haven’t been feeding your dog the right food or you haven’t been on top of his exercising routines then he will get sick and you will suffer higher medical costs than these regular visits. You can avoid these high fees by purchasing some pet insurance which will cover the costs until your pet gets better. Meds will be another expensive factor to take into account because they will subtract from $100 to $300 to prevent your dog from developing fleas, ticks, heartworms and any additional parasites that would pose a health risk to your canine companion.

hen the weather is really hot, you have to make sure that your dog does not suffer from overheating through taking certain precautionary measures. They should always have a place or a shelter which can protect them from the sun and help them keep cool. If you leave your dog inside the car but still under the sun, you are only making it suffer more as cars absorb heat. Brachycephalic dogs or dogs with a flat face can feel and absorb much faster than other dogs that have the faces of typical structure. Some of these dogs are French Bulldogs, Pekingese, Pugs, and Boston Terriers. You always have to be aware about how much they suffer under the hot weather. Though they may not move much, they can still feel the heat’s effects on them. When you want to take your dog for his routine walks, you have to do it either early in the morning or late in the afternoon. They will not be able to tell you that it is too hot and they can soon start panting. How do you know your dog is getting extremely hot? Your dog is getting extremely hot when he is heaving while panting. Quickly cool him off or this could be fatal. Your dog may be experiencing excessive heat in his body when panting is sounding more like a roar. He could die from this so you have to cool him off and get him away from the heat at once. Your dog appears distressed and he has less energy when he is getting hot. Your dog might flop his tongue out and you may notice its extremely red color. He has a higher body temperature than his normal and a swelling could occur in his airway which could cause a white foam to be filling his mouth. Things to do in case the dog overheats: 1.You can use ice to lower dog’s temperature quickly. You can cool him off by pouring cold water over the dog’s head, and rubbing ice around his rectum or you can have your dog sit in cold water while rubbing him with ice. Keep doing this until your dog’s breathing is labored. 2.You can squirt lemon juice using a plastic squeeze bottle into his throat to help him clear his airway. This will allow him to breathe easier. Don’t make him drink too much water yet as this may cause him to vomit. 3.When he is calmed down, take him to a place that is quiet where he can rest. 4.If any of these will not work, you have to take your dog to his vet and keep him cool while in the car. Keeping these things in mind, you will be able to determine if your dog is overheating and measures you can do to stop him from being so.

The Border terrier is a small sized dog that is part of the terrier group that contains a rough coat. It is used to hunt fox and vermin that is why it is breed to serve its purpose. The Border terrier came from the ancestry of the Dandie Dinmont Terriers and Bedlington Terriers. This breed is older than the British Kennel Club which has been launched in 1920s while the American Kennel club is on 1930. The Border terrier’s name was taken from the word border since it was discovered between the border of Scotland and England. This type of dog specializes in its otter shaped head. This breed has a broad skull and short but contain a strong scissors like bite.

They have a narrowed body but well proportioned one. The Border terrier contains a double coat that consists of short dense, soft undercoat and many others. You need to remove its dead hair even twice a year to make sure that they are properly trimmed and well taken care of. You should understand that this dog is very demonstrative and intelligent too. This is an obedient breed that is why they easily get along well with humans and with other dogs. They also tend to fight with other dogs if there are times when they cannot get along well with them. When this happen, you will find it hard to stop them and will cause more trouble too. This dog type is not prone to exercising although they will appreciate if they were given a chance.

Any dog breed will surely love hiking and walking under the sun. They are bred to work with people and to take activities appropriately. They can be easily trained that is why they are an optimum choice by so many people these days. This dog type is often used to help kids and senior citizens dealing with health problems. They are often called the healing dog because of their ability to use their therapy skills to help those who are sick. They are also being used as a companion for blind people during several instances. They have been considered as the stronger breed because of their ability to be trained and to follow simple instructions. They tend to bite anything including small objects when they are unhappy because of this they can be choked so you need to give them enough care they need to make them feel loved and wanted.Content provided by Jerry Brown of ohmydogsupplies.com, search for new deals on dog feeders online.

Dogs have always been considered as part of the family as they are special to their owners. Generally, a dog going missing is even considered as a depressing incident in a family, especially when they go missing accidentally. You can always do something to prevent your dogs from getting lost or going missing. For your pup to always be by your side, everything is all up to you.

Because of the advancements in technology there are now gadgets created that are now made available to help your dogs. It is a micro chip that can be scanned to determine who the owner of the dog is. This is usually embedded under the dog’s skin in the neck area of the dog. There are also times when you buy a puppy, the puppy has already been “pre-installed” with the micro chip. When you also plan to get a dog from the shelter, they will also require you to purchase a micro chip and promise to have it installed before you can even get adopt the dog. When you are not able to have the chip installed, the dog will be revoked. Most veterinarians will offer to install micro chips in your dogs at an affordable price as this has become a popular means of finding a missing dog.

Other than having a micro chip embedded in your dog, there are still other measures you can do to prevent your dog from going missing. You only have to use your common sense in most of them, while others are inexpensive. Taking pictures of your dog while he is growing is actually helpful. When your dog gets lost, you will have something you can use to post around to help in finding your dog. You can take your dog for a walk in different areas of your neighborhood. This will make other people be familiar with your dog and your dog to be recognizable and comfortable with other people. When your dog is lost just around your neighborhood, one of your neighbors might be able to see it and will realize whom it belongs to.

Lastly, whenever you leave your dogs outside your house, in your yards or lawns, it is important to make sure that your fence is tall enough for your dog not to reach the top of it. Your fences should be solid all over. Fences that have holes make it easier for the dog to escape. It will be a really big problem once you find out that your dog is gone. There is even a greater chance of your dog getting hit by a vehicle on the road especially when it does not know how to find its way home. When you are having an activity with your dog outside the house it is very important that you provide him with all his needs. When your dog has food, water, and some toys, he will be distracted and preoccupied so he won’t think about escaping from your yard.Article provided by Logan Morrison of Oh My Dog Supplies, where you can find a extraordinary assortment of dog seat covers online.

The quicker you commence with the training of your new dog the better. No matter in what manner you might do it, you should get your dog used to the regulations of your house as quickly as possible so that he can fit perfectly into the family.

A puppy can be a really enjoyable thing to bring up. However, you must stick to some form of methods. Right after your puppy wakes up, you need to take him to a designated area so he can perform his duties. This should be done also after he’s eaten as well as after he’s had a good play. This will make him used to a good routine if its done consistently and should be worked on with your puppy before all else.

You should also try to paper train you pet. A good idea is to keep several areas where paper can is accessible in the room. Lay the paper across the floor and as the days progress, take up the paper from areas where your dog has not been. Because the dog’s scent is there, he will return to the same place quite reliably, and in the end you will manage to leave a much smaller area for him successfully.

For those who are training their dogs to go outside, you should pick a specific place for your dog. This could mean accompanying your puppy to that place on a leash so that he can become familiar with that exact spot. In time it will naturally become his place of choice.

Nearly all dogs love treats. So using them as a means of establishing good behavior in your dog can really be effective. Giving your dog a reward after he has returned inside from doing his duties will help to consolidate and incite such wanted behavior.

You might need to keep your puppy within sight when he is very young and during his training. This can be achieved by attaching him to a leash which is then attached to you or a item of furniture in the house. You will then notice all your dog’s patterns. Heading in circles or squatting down, it is at this moment that you need to move in and take your dog to the designated area.

You might have decided to train your dog in a crate. If so, you can still paper train the dog. Dogs like to maintain clean homes just like humans. You need to choose a crate that is large enough for comfort purposes and dog business. Make one part of the crate his comfy area where he can sleep and the other the area where you’ll place the paper for his duties. Also, don’t make your puppy feel isolated by segregating his crate from the view of his family. If you think you’re be out for a long time, call on a member of the family or dog sitter to look after your pet. And when you are at home, allow your pet to come out of his crate several times each day.

Being a responsible dog owner, is important that you just not take good care of our dog by feeding him or training him. The simple task of bringing him outdoors is a great thing as this will help him get to experience fun and enjoyment, get fresh air and be able to do some exercises in the great outdoors. But of course, safety should still be your priority when you are outdoors and these tips will help you enjoy the great outdoors.

Whenever you are out with your dog, it is important that you consider bringing with you your fist aid kit just in case something goes wrong just as if they were children. Your first aid kit must include all basic essentials and of course the knowledge on how you are giving your dog CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) in the extreme case he might need it.

When you go outdoors with your dog, especially to places where there are a lot of weeds, shrub and tall grass, don’t forget to keep him protected with a tick and flea treatment and a flea collar. Then you get home check on him too for fleas and ticks.

Being outdoors, you will also encounter a lot of different kind of animals, especially wild animals like skunks, raccoons, or snakes. You must protect your dog from these animals and prevent him from getting hurt.

There are also plants around that could be poisonous and harmful to your dogs. You also have to keep your dogs away from such plants to avoid your dog getting poisoned as they will not be able to control their instincts as dog when it comes to things around them.

Dogs will not be able to tell you whether he is suffering from overheating or not. They often get overheated even when the weather is cool so you also have to be cautious about that. You have to be aware of the signs of overheating such as vomiting after the dog drinks and lethargy. Cool him down as soon as you find out he is overheating but you have to do it gradually to avoid getting the dog’s system shocked.

If they need proper medical attention, take them to the vet at once. Always bring with you along fresh water that your water can drink. Never allow him to drink on lakes or ponds as these bodies of water ma contain parasites or bacteria which are harmful to dogs when ingested. You can keep the water cold by putting in some ice.

Most parks are treated with chemical pesticides which could be harmful for your pet. If you don’t get the chance to know if they do, just watch out for signs your dog will exhibit like distress or some strange behaviors. Make sure to give him a bath and scrub its paws and legs once you get home. Keeping these tips in mind will help both you and your dog enjoy your stay outdoors.Content provided by Deb Johnston of ohmydogsupplies.com, look for current discounts on large dog beds online.

Obesity is the accumulation of excess fat in the body. There are a lot of dogs that tend to be obese. An estimate of about 25-40% of dogs are already obese. The primary causes of obesity are overeating and the lack of exercise in dogs. When a dog eats excess food, he could possibly gain 25% more by middle age if he is able to get an extra 1%.

Sometimes, it is even the owner that gets to know last about his dog being overweight. And they are only able to find about it after the dog’s visit to the vet for an annual check up. Weight gain in dogs is actually slow but it is only noticed to happen with its history is checked. Dogs that are overweight usually have difficulty in walking or breathing. Their tolerance to heat and mild exercise is also diminished. Your vet will have to make sure that there is no underlying cause in the dog’s weight gain by performing certain blood tests, before even declaring your dog’s obesity as a disease.

It is important that you first keep track of everything your dog is eating every day including the scraps from your table. When you are able to determine that your dog’s obesity is caused by basically overeating, then you should start an effective weight loss program. To achieve significant weight loss, there are certain steps you need to do.

First, you have to watch what your dogs eat. Lower the calories each day. It is also important that you give your dog a well balanced diet. Give your dog food that is designed for weight loss. Give him food that is rich in fiber and give him plenty of water. You can do this by adding one or two cups of some green beans in their bowl of food. Increase their activity gradually. You can start by taking your dog for a short walk and try to observe your dog’s breathing if he is obese. Increase the length of time of walks as long as your dog can tolerate it.

It is more helpful that the family should take part in the dog’s weight loss program. By placing a log or a list where everyone can easily see it, they can also check on the food they feed their dog. Everyone in the family can always help the dog achieve a healthier body. When you give your dog treats as rewards, make sure that you give them air popped popcorns or vegetables like carrots as treats.

You should keep your log and make sure you regularly revisit your vet to assess and check your dog’s weight. When your dog is also diabetic, you must keep an eye on his insulin levels. This goes too for thyroid medication. Losing weight in dogs could take quite a long time. Sometimes, it could even take eight months to as long as twelve months for a dog to achieve its ideal weight.

The commitment and the persistence of the whole family is important in helping your dog achieve a healthier body.Article provided by Amanda Tate of www.ohmydogsupplies.com, check out our complete collection of dog seat covers online.
